Tyne Folk

Martin Carthy

Martin Carthy returned to tynefolk after a long absence and as expected attracted in a large and illustrious audience.

Martin has remained one of the most influential figures in British traditional music, since the early days of modern folk.

He has also been involved with many musical collaborations, having sung with The Watersons since 1972, twice a member of the Steeleye Span, was a member of the Albion Country Band and was part of the innovative Brass Monkey ensemble, which mixed a range of brass instruments with Martin's unique guitar style and mandolin, accordion, melodeon and concertina.

Martin went through a range of material covering the span of his career, Botany Bay; My love he is young; Limbo; Princess Royal (Instrumental); The Trees they do Grow High; The Heroes of St Valerie (Instrumental) among many others and was intermittently and ably accompanied by the latest member of the Carthy folk dynasty, 4 month old Isabella, Eliza's daughter.

As well as the main guest, we were further entertained by songs from Eliza Carthy, Ray Fisher and Louisa Killen.

A veritable feast of talent. It doesn't come much better.
